Mental Health Moment | Measure 10 Areas of Your Health

Dec 05, 2023

All the areas of health in your life combine to create one overall picture of your well-being.  While you may focus on only one area of your health and think you’re in good shape, you really need to look at the overall, or holistic, picture. We’ll look at 10 areas of health here – Physical, Nutritional, Emotional, Mental, Financial, Spiritual, Social, Relational, Occupational, and Environmental.

Assigning 10 points to each area and you will have a total of 100 possible points. Score yourself for each from 0 (unhealthy) – 10 (healthy).

  1. Good physical health means being free from illness, having good vitals, healthy muscles and a low amount of body fat. A strong heart, good digestive system, and healthy blood pressure are part of good physical health, as well as being free from addiction to substances.
  2. Nutritional health focuses on what you put into your body. Eat healthy foods, avoid unhealthy foods, and stay hydrated, you’ll be taking good care of your nutritional health. Your physical health will be partially a result of your nutritional health.
  3. Emotional health is not the absence of emotion. We all get angry, upset, sad, excited, and so forth, but good emotional health means being able to manage how you act, and the decisions & choices you make, as you are experiencing different emotions.
  1. Good mental health means being able to think with clarity and make good judgments and decisions. Good mental health means being able to problem-solve, to react quickly and effectively, and to bounce back from the negatives that life sometimes throws at us.

  1. Financial health means having financial security, enough money to pay bills as well as save some. If you are constantly worrying about money, your bills are going unpaid, and you struggle with finances, this can cause high levels of stress, worry, and tension.
  2. Spiritual health means having a sense of connection to something outside of yourself. It could be feeling a close connection with God or being at peace and feeling in harmony with others, nature, or just in general. It is believing in something and gaining a sense of calm and reassurance from something or someone outside of yourself.
  3. Good social health means having a strong network around you and being socially connected with others In a positive way. Feeling supported by a social group and having those around you to count on is good social health.
  4. Relational health is similar but refers to the relationships that are in your much smaller, closer circle. This will be your family, best friends, spouse or significant other, and so on.
  5. Occupational health refers to your safety and health within your work environment. It’s making sure you feel safe as you do your work, and this includes safety from harassment, from injury, and from all types of workplace hazards.
  6. Environmental health involves areas of your life, like work, home, school, etc. Environmental health is good if you are free from dangers like bad air quality, water shortages or unclean water, and other types of sanitation and hygiene issues. Being free from things like dangerous weather, poisons, chemicals, extreme temperatures, dangerous noise levels, and so forth, all create good environmental health.

All areas of your health should be in good condition, or the less healthy areas can start affecting the healthy areas. If you’ve ever had financial stress or worry, for example, you know that it can affect your mood, your patience level, and your relationships with others.  Take a good look at your own health, and all the areas separately, as
